A sterling mounted walnut tray.

The sterling frame is well made with ball feet, a pierced rim and a sturdy upper border. The removable tray is inlaid with a pair of lines near the edge of the bottom and a central cartouche enclosing a shell.

Although it would have many uses today, it’s proportions suggest it might have originally been intended as a desk tray.

The frame is stamped with “Sterling”, the maker’s mark of Herbst & Wassall, and with the retailer’s mark of Udall & Ballou.

Herbst & Wassall worked in New York City and Newark New Jersey from 1903 to 1931.
