The Martelé pitcher was made in 1906 as a special order for the Chicago‘s grand department store Spaldings.  Both the form and decoration are strong examples of art nouveau design. The body is decorated with serpentine water lily stems capped by buds against a background of water lily leaves, with a water lily bloom under the spout.   The background is finely planished. 

The work record is on page 367 of Martelé  950/1000 fine Gorham’s Art Nouveau Silver by L J Presto, Phd shows that Gorham’s craftsmen spent  112 hours making this pitcher, 52 hours of silver smithing, and 60 hours of chasing by master chaser David Wilmont.
